To Fully Experience the Magnificience of the Grand Canyon...
You've Got to Take an Airplane Tour!

Welcome to Grand Canyon Airplanes! I'm Keith Kravitz & I'm a travel writer focused EXCLUSIVELY on canyon airplane tours.

I've flown all the major carriers & know for a fact that all are not created equal. So I put together this review site to prove it.

Below are the cream of the crop. My #1 pick is Papillon, which is the leader in VALUE. Second is Maverick Airlines - it dominates the high-end market. Lastly, Scenic Airlines, the airline I use when my top picks are sold out.

Each carrier is best in class, offering daily flights from Las Vegas, NV, to the West Rim and South Rim of the National Park. Papillon & Scenic are the only two with departures from Tusayan.

The companies offer a variety of trip packages, ranging from aerial to landing. The later are only available from Las Vegas, the most popular being the direct flight from Vegas to South Rim w/ ground tour.

So go ahead and "kick the tires." From value to high-end, there's a Grand Canyon airplane tour for everyone!

Papillon Airlines

Papillon Airlines(My #1 Recommendation)

  • Terrific views
  • Great safety record
  • Las Vegas, South Rim departures
  • Large selection
  • Best website
  • Value

Papillon combines great tours with excellent pricing to deliver awesome value.

Papillon Airlines is my top pick for value-oriented travelers. This company's flights are by far the cheapest option on the table. Las Vegas travelers can fly to the West Rim or the South Rim. West Rim flight include aerial and landing. The air tour is PERFECT for visitors with limited time for sightseeing (or on a tight budget). Landing tours let you explore the top of the rim (including the Skywalk) or the bottom via helicopter; you can even add a Colorado River boat ride to the mix. South Rim flights, which depart from Tusayan, AZ, are strictly aerial per FAA regulations. The best one is a 50-minute adventure that includes flying over the South Rim, North Rim and everything up to the eastern boundary. Helicopter travelers - if your chopper flight is sold out, airplanes are your next best alternative! Planes seat up to 19 passengers and are a tribute to comfort and convenience.

Maverick Airlines

Maverick Airlines

Maverick Airlines is the ONLY option for travelers who want a 5-star experience. The company uses the best aircraft on the market, including the Beechcraft 1900D, which has the look, feel and ride of a Learjet. The company's air terminals are the lap of luxury, and, unlike Papillon, where boarding calls are like a Southwest Airlines scrum, Maverick's are effortless and stress-free. Customer service is phenomenal. I've yet to run into a rep that treated me like a number. Maverick's tours are all about quality, convenience and safety. The company departs from Las Vegas and Henderson, NV, (there are NO Tusayan departures) and offers service to the West Rim and the South Rim. Landing and air tours are available. My favorite is the Canyon Dream. It's a direct flight from Las Vegas to the South Rim (50 minutes!) and includes a helicopter and bus tour at the National Park.

Scenic Airlines

Scenic Airlines

Scenic is my go-to airlines if my value option (Papillon) or my 5-star pick (Maverick) are sold out. This company is the one put Grand Canyon air tours on the map back in 1927. They fly hordes of folks out of Las Vegas, NV, and the South Rim (e.g. Tusayan) and service the West Rim and the South Rim. Their selection includes aerial and landing tours (West Rim only), which they do aboard customized aircraft that can accommodate up to 19 people. They are a great option for international travelers who speak little or no English because they offer a pre-recorded trip narration in up to 11 languages (Japanese, Chinese, German, French, Italian, etc.). Papillon and Maverick also offer such translations but aren't nearly as comprehensive as Scenic's.
